Scratch was founded in 2003 by Ari Techner, our President/CEO: Chad Techner our VP of Marketing: Jeff McCoy, our Chief Design Engineer and Master Craftsman: and Paul Friedrich, our Executive Vice President. Jeff has been grinding golf clubs since High School and has an incredible talent for shaping golf clubs. Growing up, he worked on wedges for many of the top players in his area.
Scratch was formed to fill a void in the golf market, as nobody was making custom wedges one at a time to fit the individual player. Custom fitting became the rage in golf, but nobody was doing anything to fit the proper wedges to the players swing. Before we sold a single wedge, a year was spent on R&D testing different wedge grinds with different players swings to determine exactly what worked and why. Our proprietary grind fitting system assigns you into one of the three swing types that we identified: the Sweeper/Slider; Driver/Slider or Digger/Driver. These identified swing types and our fitting system is rooted in our extensive R&D and real world player testing.
Our first product offering was our Tour Custom wedges which were handmade one at a time by Master Craftsman Jeff McCoy. Soon after, we released our Tour Custom irons to satisfy a serious demand from our existing customers. 2006 saw the release of our retail JLM wedges, while our retail irons were released in 2007. In 2009 we released the 1018 and 8620 wedges which, along with our Tour Custom Iron/Wedges and our Retail Irons comprise our current product line.
We have also seen great success on various major worldwide Tours. 2006 saw Scratch wedges in play on the Nationwide and PGA Tour for the first time. We graduated one player using our wedges from the Nationwide Tour to the PGA Tour at the end of that year and by the end of 2007 we were the No. 1 forged wedge company on the Nationwide Tour. In 2008 Scratch wedges won two tournaments on the Nationwide Tour. 2009 and 2010 saw Scratch enjoy breakthrough success on both the PGA and LPGA Tours with 5 LPGA Tour Wins including a historic victory at the 2010 LPGA Championship as well as 10 Top 15s, 7 Top 10s and 3 Top 5s on the PGA Tour. In 2011, Scratch continued its success on the PGA and LPGA Tour with 6 Top 25s, 3 Top 20s and 2 Top 10s on the PGA Tour as well as 14 Top 10s, 10 Top 5 and 3 2nd place finishes on the LPGA Tour. This year, Scratch Golf wedges and irons are in play on every major professional tour worldwide, including the PGA, Champions, Nationwide, LPGA, Futures, Hooters, Tarheel, European PGA, European Challenge and European LPGA Tours.
