Sand Wedge Revisted

   Wedges should not be an afterthought.  Don’t assume the sand wedge that comes with your set is fine, but don’t assume that it isn’t, either.  Game-improvement features in wedges, like the blunt leading edge and extra-wide sole on the TAYLORMADE  r7 Draw wedge might help your game more than a specialty wedge that you buy separately.  Most specialty wedges offer a higher level of subtiety in design and technology (like the five sole grinds available on SCRATCH JLM wedges and the thinly spaced grooves and milled face on the WISHON CX Micro). That means features like groove depth and edges can be milled more precisely and depending on the player the ball (urethane-cover only) and the conditions this can provide spin and control benefits.

Wedges to consider (from top):
WISHON CX Micro (20 scorelines designed with U.S. Golf Association minimum separation $80, twgolftech.com);
BEN HOGAN Apex (forged, six models, $120, benhogan.com);
WILSON STAFF Tw7 (cast from 431 stainless steel with sharp-angled grooves, $130 wilson.com);
TAYLORMADE r7 Draw (49, 54 and 59 degrees, $105, taylormadegolf.com);
SCRATCH JLM (grinds designed to fit steep and shallow swings $200, scratchgolf.com).
