CLEVELAND CG12 DSG

The Cleveland zip grooves put some serious grab on the ball. You’ll be picking ball shearings out of the grooves every time you use them. The DSG sole grind makes this a much more versatile wedge around the green. The heel is ground flat to make it easy to open the clubface, while the sole features a narrow high bounce design that makes it easy from the sand and from tight lies as well.

TAYLORMADE GROOVES

TaylorMade Y grooves have had a cult following over the last few years in the land of the internet, renowned for their constant spin. The new Z grooves are 10 percent larger, with sharper edges to them for maximum spin. The new smoked PVD finish is beautiful. Shiny on the back, nice and glare-free at address.

In a world in which bespoke is becoming a mantra rather than just a concept, Scratch golf are the people to talk to about wedges. Think of them as wedge tailors. Scratch have identified that there are three types of wedge player depending on the size of divot they take. By offering six different sole grinds everyone can maximize their short game potential.

The best way to find the right grind is to get yourself fitted by someone who really knows what they are doing. In the absence of that possibility I have also had amazing success with fittings over the phone or internet. With my fittings I will go through a series of 15-20 questions about your short game so we can colour in the picture and assess what type of player you are and from there I will recommend the right grind for you.

The biggest problem that I see is people using a lob wedge that does not have enough bounce. For years it was thought that if you were a ‘better player’ then you needed low bounce. In general this could not be further from the truth. The amount of bounce and the sole grind you need is determined by your angle of attack and how you go through the ball. It has nothing to do with how good a player you are.

Pretty much all companies are using some form of wide U groove today in their wedge designs, and our findings show that they all spin about the same on shots with pure contact. There’s a new groove rule being considered by the powers that be which will mostly make wedges spin less from the rough. From the fairway, however, a purely struck shot will spin about the same according to studies provided by the USGA.
