I was recently fortunate enough to receive one of the first, left handed Scratch Golf wedges. Ari told me they just started getting these in so it took a little while for me to get it. Sizes are still limited but I wanted a 56* which Ari had.
I just wanted to right a brief review of this wedge since it is my first Scratch Golf wedge and first forged wedge. Let me start by telling you about the service from Ari. I initially wrote an email to Scratch asking about the possibility of a left handed club. Ari himself wrote me back, which surprised me a little. We discussed what would fit my game and decided on the specifics then the order was placed.
When I first got the wedge, I noticed right away how great the finish of this club was. The grind of this wedge was the TNC grind. Ari even put my initials on it, a nice little touch.
I first took this club to the range a few days later. This is a 56* wedge that I hit about the same distance as my previous wedge (Vokey SM). I switched off just to verify making sure to use full shots as well as ¾ and ½ shots. It felt great, nice and smooth as you would expect with a forged club. I did notice a slightly higher flight pattern when compared to my Vokey.
I then took the club to the practice chip and pitch area at my course. The grass here still hasn’t really come in so the area surrounding the practice green is pretty hard resulting in some tight lies. I tried the club starting at 30 yds and came into about 5 yds just to work with a variety of shots. This club performs much better then the Vokey when layed open due to the cool grind, which really comes in handy with these tight lies. The touch I was able to get was wonderful and certainly inspired confidence for me even when hitting over the sand trap.
I then took the club to the practice sand. I was a little worried since this club does have a bit less bounce then my Vokey. I was pleasantly surprised with the way this club performed out of the sand. No problems even though I sometimes have a tendency to hit some sand shots fat.
For anyone thinking of a custom wedge, I certainly recommend Ari and his team. Thanks for such a great product…I will certainly be ordering Scratch golf wedges to complete the rest of my wedge set.
